Mencap Gateway Award

Information

Overview

The Gateway Award is designed for people of all ages and abilities with a learning disability, allowing participants to set personal challenges and complete activities at their own pace. It is inclusive of individuals with profound or multiple learning disabilities, and activities can be adapted to suit each participant. Members do not have to complete activities externally, the award can be achieved through your usual weekly classes offered here, however if a member chooses to submit evidence from an outside activity e.g. from a sports club they attend for their Fitness section this will be considered.

Award Structure

The award has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each level consists of five sections:

  • Hobbies: Developing personal interests such as arts, crafts, or collections e.g. learning a new crafting skill in our Art & Craft classes.
  • Fitness: Engaging in physical activities to improve health e.g. our new walking group.
  • Lifestyle: Learning to maintain a safe and healthy life e.g. by making healthy meals in our Make & Bake sessions.
  • Volunteering: Contributing to the community or helping others by taking on voluntary tasks within Braintree Mencap.
  • Gateway Challenge: A personal or group project chosen by the member.
  • Participants collect evidence of their activities, such as photos or videos, and submit it through an online profile. Each section requires at least one piece of evidence and a sign-off form, which is verified by the Mencap Gateway Award team.
