On Wednesday 31st October Braintree Mencap opened their doors to the local community for the return of their annual Soupaday.
Staff and volunteers rolled up their sleeves and together made an impressive variety of 12 homemade delicious soups, from Leek and potato all the way to the unconventional ‘Chilli non Carne’ – the favourite of the day!
The event was led by the members of our Life Skills cooking class who were able to serve our guests their lunch as well as run the kitchen, successfully selling a yummy selection of homemade sweet treats!
It was wonderful to see so many faces, old and new supporting Braintree Mencap without which we wouldn’t be able to run such efficacious events, so a huge thank you to everyone involved on the day helping us to raise a ‘souper’ £138.35.
Members Annual Party 2018
On Friday 8th March, over 80 of our members gathered at the Bocking Village Hall for the return of our infamous Annual Party.
The evening was celebrated in style with party frocks and bow ties paraded on the dance floor as everyone danced the night away to a one night only return of Retro Sparkle. Roofs were raised from cheers by all as we listened to the beautiful singing of Sara-Jane accompanied by music played by Sue on the keyboard, a massive thank you from us all for your support at this event.
Did someone mention food? Tables reaching from one end of the hall to the other were covered in an assortment of delicious buffet foods, from sandwiches and sausage rolls to home-made cakes, no one left feeling hungry! Huge thanks goes to Mavourneen and Don for laying on a spread enjoyed by all.
A huge thank you to everyone who bought tickets for our raffle, raising a grand total of £100.00 with an extended thanks going to our very own Reclaimers group for donating their hand crafted bird boxes and boot removers as prizes.
As with any event we rely heavily on the support of volunteers without which we would be unable to run, so however you were involved on the night, thank you, your help was thoroughly appreciated.
See you all in 2020 for the next one!
Beauty And The Beast
After over a year of rehearsals the day finally came for our very own Drama class to showcase their long awaited production of Beauty and the beast.
On Friday 22nd of March Charles Leeks House played host to a show stopping performance with a crowd of nearly 50 people flooding through our doors. With a cast of 16 including Brenda as Belle, Lenny as the Beast and Patrick as our Narrator the evening was a hit! Everyone worked incredibly hard to play their parts memorising lines and pushing past their nerves to deliver a performance to be proud of. A huge congratulations and pat on the back to each and every single one of you.
As with anything here at Braintree Mencap an incredible amount of hard work also took place behind the scenes. A huge thanks goes to Alex for being in charge of lighting and music and building a fantastic stage, to Sue and Ian for giving up their evening to be on hand for costumes and line prompting and to Sharon for spending weeks in the build up assisting with the production of some fantastic props.
An extended thank you goes to our very own Sarah Elliot for being a top producer, working tirelessly to run a fun, exciting and inclusive class each and every week.
And just as everyone breathes a sigh of relief the excitement doesn’t end there! Join our drama class every Tuesday between 2-4 pm to be a part of our new cast, as Braintree Mencap does The Greatest Showman! For more information call us 01376 326302.
